Running a business means making fast decisions every day. Scammers rely on that. A few simple habits can help you catch what a busy moment might miss – before any money leaves your account.
Give yourself permission to pause.
Before you do anything, ask yourself:
- Did it come out of nowhere? Take a moment to verify unexpected texts, calls, or emails – especially if they ask for money or sensitive information.
- Does it feel urgent? Treat pressure to pay quickly as a red flag, even if it’s expected, or appears to come from someone you know.
Double‑check before you pay.
Small, simple habits that can make a big difference.
- Compare invoice details with ones you’ve received from that supplier before – even expected invoices are worth checking carefully.
- Confirm changes in bank details with the business using their publicly listed number.
- Use Confirmation of Payee to check the account name and number match.
- Where possible, set up two‑to‑sign, to have a second person approve payments as an extra check before money leaves your account.
Make sure it’s really ASB. (or your bank)
- Ask for a Caller Check notification if someone calls claiming to be us – one quick check and you’ll know for certain.
- Never share your Netcode or Business Token with anyone – even if they say they’re from the bank. ASB or NZ banks will never ask you to read these out over the phone.
- Only access your banking by typing the official website into your address bar. Don’t use links in emails or visit a web address you’re given over the phone.
Start with one small step.
